Hygiene is a fundamental part of dog care. If we want our dog to be healthy, providing proper hygiene is essential. Before a problem arises that requires veterinary attention, there are many preventative measures we can take. Tear duct cleaning in long-haired dogs should be done weekly. Eye discharge caught in the fur is difficult to remove directly without pulling out hair and irritating the skin near the eyes. Continuous contact with the tear duct causes discoloration of the fur. This happens because the fur burns and, consequently, darkens or reddens. Ear cleaning should be performed regularly: you should check and keep the ears clean, as they are also one of the areas that get the dirtiest. Generally, weekly cleaning is sufficient for a dog with healthy ears (or even biweekly). The symptoms of an ear infection can vary depending on the area of the ear where the problem is located, and the deeper the infection is, the worse the symptoms usually are. If you notice your dog shaking its head a lot, scratching its ear excessively, experiencing pain when eating or barking, pawing at the area a lot, or producing ear canal discharge, there may be an abnormality in its ear canal, and it's important to see a veterinarian to identify exactly what may be causing the ear infection. Proper teeth cleaning is essential to avoid bad breath (halitosis), gum inflammation and pain, or difficulty eating. A high percentage of dogs experience dental problems starting at three years of age. Tartar is one of the first signs that our pet's oral hygiene is not being maintained properly. In more complex cases, we should see a veterinarian, but we can prevent it with weekly brushing. Small breeds are more prone to developing tartar and plaque, as are Boxers, Chihuahuas, and Maltese.
